Interior—Speedometer

A view of the uphostery department at the Kissel factory

SPEEDOMETER REPAIR: Lynn attempts to repair the speedometer using parts from multiple instruments that he's acquired (four photos on left). Lynn fashions a replacement for a broken speedometer cable link (extreme right photo).

Lynn has made initial attempts to get the speedometer working. There are multiple problems as the dash instrument wasn't spinning freely and the cable is broken.

According to his literature, the speedometer is a Stewart Model 160. Lynn buys several Stewart speedometers on eBay and scavenges parts to build one he thinks should operate correctly. He installs his repaired speedometer in the car.

The link-chain speedometer cable has a broken link. Fashioning a new link from wire, Lynn installs the repaired cable in the car and starts down the road. Within a block, the cable apparently binds and proceeds to wrap itself into a tight ball that needs to be hack sawed off.

Lynn has been looking but has not been able to procure a replacement cable online, yet. He anticipates trying to build a new cable, using a modern cable core but fitting it inside a large diameter sheath so that it appears original from the outside.
