Jeanne’s Retirement Party
June 27, 2010

Bugsby exhibits his new top at Jeanne's retirement party, June 27.

Jeanne is retiring and Lynn is hosting a party for her. The party will have a 1920s theme with period music (Jelly Roll Morton). In the invitation, guests are encouraged to dress in 1920s attire. Over 100 people have been invited and over 50 people have accepted the invitation. Bugsby will serve as a prop for the party.

Using a logo he created, Lynn has 1" pins and printed glasses created as mementos of the event.

Lynn, with the help of Jeanne's friend Katherine, has been planning this party for months. The party will be an afternoon "lawn party" held under a grape arbor at Concannon Vineyard in Livermore.

Lynn has created a logo of a dressage rider (Jeanne's passion) just for this event. As take-home mementos for the guests, Lynn has had small hard-enamel pins created bearing this image, and it has also been imprinted on black-stemmed wine glasses.

A fabulous selection of appetizers is being prepared by Piccola Casa who will cater the event. Several weeks ago, Lynn gathered five friends and Jeanne to sample proposed food for the party. They voted after each proposed food item and Lynn tallied the results. Based on this tasting, Lynn selected a final menu for the event with Katherine which includes:

  • Smoked salmon on wanton chips with chipotle aioli sauce;
  • Stuffed eggplant rolls;
  • Marinated beef skirt on a stick;
  • Breaded coconut shrimp;
  • Thai curry spring rolls;
  • Stuffed Belgian endive;
  • Italian prosciutto wrapped melon;
  • Combo bruschetta;
  • Fresh strawberries dipped in dark and white chocolate.

In consultation with the chef at Piccola Casa and the sommelier at Concannon Vineyard, four wines have been selected to complement the menu:

  • 2008 Chardonnay;
  • 2009 Pinot Grigio;
  • 2007 Petite Sirah;
  • 2007 Pinot Noir.

For the last several months, Bugsby has been in the upholstery shop, having a new top fabricated. This was the last major step in a four-year serious freshening that Lynn started in 2006. In addition to the new top, most of Bugsby's bright work has been freshly nickel plated or polished by Johnson Plating.

Jeanne and Lynn (top-left) enjoy the afternoon with fifty of their closest friends.

The party is great fun and a big success. The music helps set the mood as the guests enjoy the wine, food and lots of conversation. The afternoon gets warm and it would have been uncomfortable if it were not for the leaf covered arbor. The guests help Jeanne celebrate the transition to a new life of self-directed pursuits.

After the official party ends, Maurie and Steve invite Jeanne and Lynn and about a dozen other friends to their home for an after-party pool party. The water is a very refreshing end to a warm afternoon and marks the perfect end to the day.

As is typical for Lynn, it's a last minute panic trying to get Bugsby ready. Since March, all the instruments, headlights, bright work and other parts have been off the car being refinished. Getting everything back on the car takes much of the two weeks that Lynn has had the car since it came back from the upholsterer. Working into the night on the evening before the party, Lynn finally has the car in a complete enough state that he's willing for it to be available for public inspection.
