Interior—Vinyl Upholstery

A view of the uphostery department at the Kissel factory

VINYL UPHOLSTERY: Although quite serviceable for his current use, the vinyl interior will be need to be replaced with leather in the fullness of time.

The most glaring deficiency with the interior is the black vinyl that covers the seat, instrument panel, lower kick panels, insides of doors and underside of the rear hatch. The original material was undoubtedly leather, and the current vinyl upholstery will need to be replaced eventually. For now the vinyl is quite servicable and this upgrade is lower on Lynn's priority list.

A more immediate problem is that the furniture nail fasteners of some of the trim panels have pulled out and the corners are lifted and loose. Lynn uses some small wood screws and nickel plated finish washers to secure the corners of the vinyl trim. He uses the same treatment to fix lifted corners of the aluminum tread plate that glued to the top of the floor boards.

One somewhat surprising dilemma that Lynn's facing is obtaining fasteners that are appropriate for use on Bugsby. All the local hardware stores have converted their screws to Phillips heads and their use in Bugsby is an anachronism. Slot headed screws are the appropriate fasteners to use in most cases, and they're impossible to obtain from local sources. It looks like Lynn will have to get his fasteners through suppliers of restoration hardware.

The rubber tread on the aluminum step plates was warn and was loose. Lynn buys some black rubber floor runners from the local hardware store, cuts them to fit the space and glues them down. This restoration may have to be eventually revisited, but Lynn thinks it looks OK for now.
