WINDSHIELD FRAME AND WIPERS: Bugsby arrived with an upper windshield frame holding a wiper motor and blades (left, center). Lynn removes these nonfunctioning parts and dramatically improves the appearance of the car (right).

Bugsby arrived with a windshield metal frame that completely enclosed the glass on all four sides. The upper portion of this frame held an electric motor and wiper blades. However the wiper motor was not working and the blades were in poor shape and relatively useless, although they could likely have been repaired.

Lynn examined his collection of Speedster pictures and can find no example that shows a metal frame enclosing the top of the windshield glass, or a car with wiper blades. Lynn suspects that the blades were added to satisfy an Australian requirement for street operation of motor vehicles and that this was a reasonably modern add-on.

On a closer examination, Lynn sees that the frame can be easily split and the upper portion removed, resulting in a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the car. It remains to fabricate some small caps to finish the exposed ends of the lower frame. Lynn has observed in some photos that a small clip attached at this position is used as a tie down point for the fabric top -- the connection is made using leather straps.
