Engine—Oil Level Indicator

The Kissel Model 6-55 advanced six-cylinder engine

OIL LEVEL GAUGE: The dial on the oil level gauge is badly corroded (left). Lynn builds a temporary replacement using heavy photo paper (center) which discolors and swells from exposure to the oil fumes (right).

Bugsby has a mechanical oil level indicator attached to the side of the oil pan. A cork float is attached to the end of a piece of wire; the cork floats on the top of the oil, moving the gauge dial to indicate the level of oil in the pan. The dial inside the oil level indicator is badly corroded. Lynn uses his computer and an image editing program to create a temporary replacement on heavy photo paper. Unfortunately this dial is subjected to fumes from the oil pan and Lynn doesn't expect this repair to last long. Indeed, the paper absorbs oil and becomes discolored after a month, becoming soft and distorted. Maybe the replacement would last longer if the paper were saturated with clear lacquer or some other clear protectant. In any case, a more permanent replacement dial is needed.
