Chassis—Mechanical Brakes
Lynn in Bugsby, September 5, 2005
|
Completed: 2008-04-12 — Started: 2006-05-28
MECHANICAL BRAKES:
The mechanical brakes are completely disassembled from the brake pedal back to the brake drums,
cleaned, lubricated and reassembled with new clevis pins.
|
Work Completed:
Lynn completely disassembles, cleans and reassembles the mechanical brakes and linkage.
Almost all of the brake pivot points and cross shafts were frozen from corrosion and it takes
considerable effort to work everything free.
New clevis pins are purchased from
Restoration Supply Company
and installed.
Lynn is really pleased with the result and thinks the brakes will be much more effective now that
the mechanical equalization between left and right sides is working properly.
This phase of the work was completed in July, 2006.
NEW BRAKE PARTS:
Replacement pivot pins remove excessive "play" in the arm that actuates the brakes.
|
Lynn isn't happy with the excessive "slop" in the actuating arm for the rear brakes caused by wear
on the pivot pins.
Because the 7/16" holes in the arm are elongated with wear, the holes are drilled out to 1/2".
Using the shanks of 1/2" and 3/4" machine bolts, Lynn fashions new pins in April, 2008.
Work Remaining:
None.
